The Plight

The floods that have recently hit Pakistan have caused devastating effects.  Over 17 million people have been affected by the floods, and at least 1,600 have been killed.

The floods that are sweeping from the north of the country have swept entire villages away, and left 800,000 people cut off in the north.  5 million Pakistanis have no shelter against the raging sun, and 6 million are in urgent need of food aid.

People are surrounded by the filthy brown water, which is aiding the spread of diseases such as cholera, dysentery, and diarrhoea. 1.6 million people are suffering with these at the moment, and many more problems arise 4-6 weeks after floods, meaning much more medical support will be needed.  When cholera takes hold in an already vulnerable population it can kill up to 50-60% of those infected if they do not receive prompt treatment.

There is nowhere for people to wash, causing a faster spread of infection.

The floods have so far destroyed more than 17,000 square kilometres of land. This is going to have a major effect on the economic growth of Pakistan, and its agricultural sector.

New areas are still being flooded, and more and more devastation is being revealed all the time.

Islamic Relief have launched an emergency £2 million appeal to help the people of Pakistan.  They have already helped thousands of people, but more aid is desperately required.  Islamic Relief are initially helping with essential life-saving items, such as tents and water purification tablets, but will also be involved in helping to clear away mud and landslide debris.

Here’s what your money can do:

  • £40 = A food pack for a family
  • £265 = Farmer’s toolkit
  • £1,50o = A family home
